And astute businesswoman we’ve got alexandra la pastal here today and she is the founder of the award-winning winery casa la so one of the she is producing one of the finest wines here in chile so welcome alexander to the show hello great to see you again i know you
Have a very tight schedule i’m glad that we were able to jig our schedule so that we could have you here today well i’m very happy to be with you you are wine conditioners and it’s going to be fun to exchange with you all about chile and our lapa store wines absolutely now
Chile has definitely been in the news recently and uh you know congratulations to the country of chile to pulling off that incredible feat saving all those men um in the one in the mines the whole world was fixated on the country of chile it’s definitely been on everybody’s uh conscience
Yes and uh i think it shows what i i have every day with my team it shows the the strength of the chilean people and also they are very audacious people and they don’t give up it exactly and so i think it was a great example of
How chilean people behave and this is why i like so much to go to chile because it’s really um refreshing and to to work with them yes and also speaking of having the strength and courage we had of course the um the the earthquake that happened in february that was
Major was it 8.8 on the richter scale yeah maybe we can tell everybody just quickly how are the wineries faring now after the earthquake well uh it’s been it’s been tough because it it’s just happened before the the harvest yes so we had to deal with this plus we had
To prepare the harvest with all those problems but um the chileans once again they showed really their commitment yes and their courage and i can tell you that for example at la postal we we were able to really bottle the wine after two weeks everything was set up and my team worked like
Uh crazy to be make it happen yes to make it happen now i know here in ontario our 2010 vintage is going to be the best of the 2000s what’s happening in chile and in general with the vintage of 2010. well it’s it’s it’s a it’s a great vintage because uh we we
Everything was ready just very uh before the earth shook a lot of pressure but everything was ready and uh it’s going to be a great vintage uh quite a cool one which is good because it’s funny because we are talking about the warm climate worldwide and what’s going on
But i can tell you that in chile i don’t know why it’s the opposite we have a cooler uh cooler climate than uh usually which is good which is good because we have then like this uh very elegant uh wines yes i guess the one the grapes are able to stay on the
Vine a little bit longer not get over not so ripe and have a lot more finesse and elegance absolutely and so like this this is why as french people we like that climate which is being not and it looks like more and more like what we know and so
We have the sunny days without rain yes but we have cool nights and um and and so it’s a very good balance paradise for the grapes paradise for the grapes paradise for the people do you spend a lot of time you need to go yes i do
I i enjoy it a lot so i live in geneva in switzerland yes but i go and uh now in london as well but uh i go to chile five times a year now you might detect uh viewers and listeners out there that this lovely lady has a lovely accent
It happens to be a french accent now tell us our viewers a little bit about your family history because this is quite a celebrity we have here oh wow absolutely i don’t know but my my family produces grand marnier so it’s the french liquor it’s my great grandfather who created grand marnier
In 1880 and we also we are from the loire valley in sunset and so we own the chateau de santel and so this is how i came to be more involved in the one side of our company and so i said i i would like to have why don’t we buy another vineyard
And this is how everything started uh in chile and how why why chile of all the places around the world that you could have gone to i know your father came to said let’s diversify alexandra it’s up to you why chile is why going so far when you have so great vineyards in
France and why don’t uh very it’s logical there is an explanation it’s because chilean people went to bordeaux in the 1860s and brought back vines from france yes to plant them in their country in chile and so it’s a little bit like we have a small part of france over there right
And uh as you may know in europe in the 1870s there was an insect who the philoxera yes who divested all the vineyards but never came to chile and so we still have the original vines which existed before this crisis of phylloxera in europe and so it’s really very interesting for us as
French people to go there and to see how those vines have evolved in this beautiful climate yes now we’re going to need to go to a break shortly but before we do um we just want to mention uh george and i are very excited we’re going to be having a
Fabulous holiday special the wine ladies holiday special in support of the united way which is going to be taking place november the 11th and it’s going to be an incredible evening with all your wine your food your beer your food your food and your entertainment included
And maybe we should just tell a little bit more about the event before we go to a break absolutely the very famous photojournalist peter bragg is going to be there snapping pictures as you walk the red carpet after you disembark out of a white stretch limousine there’s going to be a
Live auction with uh probably about ten thousand dollars worth of prizes and one huge slay that’s going to be filled with wine and vodka and coffee and everything you can possibly imagine for the holidays so that just gives you a little bit of a taste of the event
And of course thanks to our sponsors liaison college which is going to be providing all the food and chisholm schools of oakville as well as mary kardemoni so we’re going to go to a nice break and we’ll write back in just a moment with alexandra looking for a new career
