Terroir! What is it? This little word that means so much and yet is so simple at the same time.

TERROIR IS NOT JUST DIRT

Terroir is everything that makes a vineyard unique, and it’s the organizing principal behind the French wine classification system (and pretty much all wine classification systems).

Terroir is dirt, yes, and it’s slope, and it’s the direction the vineyards face. Do they face the sun? It’s the altitude, it’s the trees nearby, it’s the climate (but not the weather, that’s the vintage).
