Travel can be stressful under the best of circumstances. But the disabled, the elderly and others with special needs often struggle with more travel issues than most. Travelling while disabled can be up to four times more expensive, according to some estimates. And often, planes, ships, hotels, dining places and destinations are unable to accommodate their needs.

Advocates have been calling for the travel industry – from airlines, to land transport, to tourist attractions such as beaches, museums, theatres and restaurants – to ensure that all travellers are cared for, regardless of their physical or mental conditions. But while some industry players are taking steps toward greater inclusivity and accessibility, there are limits to what they can do and widespread travel accessibility remains an elusive dream.
