Welcome to the Kerala Backwaters. This complex network of interconnected waterways, lagoons, and lakes is located along the coast of the state of Kerala in southern India.

It’s now a popular tourist destination because of its serene atmosphere, picturesque views, traditional houseboats, and local cuisine. But historically, these waterways were used by European colonizers to ship valuable spices back to Europe.
In this documentary, we’re staying on one of this area’s beautiful houseboats to learn how the backwaters serve as a vital source of livelihood for the local communities. We’ll be exploring small villages, local churches and temples, and indulging in some of the best south Indian seafood you’ll find anywhere.
