The French government rejected on Friday accusations by the UN of racism among its police, made after a 17-year-old was shot and killed at point-blank range in the chest by an officer during a traffic stop. In response to riots rocking cities across the country, 45,000 police were deployed. “In the long term, I think there needs to be a much more constructive response,” asserts Dr. Fraser McQueen, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, Department of European Languages and Cultures. He further explains to FRANCE 24 that “the response can’t only be increased policing.”
