David Allen MW, Our wine director tastes what he hopes will be a classic, rich, off-dry style of Gewurztraminer, Domaine Schoffit’s Gewurztraminer Cuvee Caroline 2019 from the Harth lieu dit.

The Schoffit family trace their history back to 1599 as farmers in the region round the city of Colmar, right at the heart of the Alsace Wine Region. It was however only in 1973 that Robert Schoffit founded the current wine estate, concentrating the family’s efforts solely on wine production.

The estate has three principal vineyards. A 6.5 hectare portion of the steep Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, which Robert bought when abandoned and restored. They have a hectare of vines on the Sommerberg Grand Cru (another steep vineyard with granite soils). Thirdly they have 9 hectares of a single vineyard (lieu dit) called Harth. Harth’s alluvial soils with well-drained gravel give even ripening and good richness to its wines.

Today Robert’s son Bernard runs the estate with the assistance of hi son Alexandre.
