Today Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director and Master of Wine, David Allen, tastes a wine from Gerard Bertrand’s Chateau l’Hospitalet. The 2019 Grand Vin turns out to be a rich, ripe wine with a supple structure and exotic spices. It is a warming wine that should age well for the mid-term, but is drinking quite well now.
Chateau L’Hospitalet is a wine estate, hotel, beach resort and spa located in the heart of the La Clape wine region in southern France. It is owned by former French rugby player-turned southern France wine mogul Gérard Bertrand and his eponymous wine company. The estate is located just 10km (six miles) east of Narbonne, almost midway between Narbonne and the Mediterranean coast further east.
The wider estate, lying in the center of the La Clape Massif range, covers 1000 hectares (2500 acres) and, as well as vines, covers the main building, a winery, a hotel/resort (including the Villa Soleilla property in the vines), restaurants and cellar door. The vineyards account for 82 hectares (200 acres) and are certified organic and biodynamic.
Varieties on the property include the classic southern Rhône combination of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Vines for the estate’s white wines include Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier.
A number of labels are produced at the estate but the principle wines are the flagship L’Hospitalitas red (a Syrah – Mourvèdre blend), and the Grand Vin in red (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre blend) and white (Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier).
