Further to our earlier tastings of Chateau Mont Redon’s Chateauneuf du Pape wines. our Wine Director, David Allen MW, has alighted upon a Vieux Marc made by distilling the pomace from the estate’s Chateauneuf du Papes Rouge. The spirit ages for 12 years, in the estate’s cellars, in new (365ltr) french oak barrels. The resulting spirit is really rather fine.

Chateau Mont-Redon is the largest wine producer in Chateauneuf du Pape with more land under vine than any other wine estate in the region. It produces both red and white wines from the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation, as well as wines from estate vineyards in Lirac, Cairanne, and in the wider Cotes du Rhône winemaking zone.

The estate’s history is one of the longest in the southern Rhône Valley, dating back to 1344 when the officially recognized vineyard was known as Mourredon. In the 1920s, the château’s vineyard land greatly expanded as parcels were pieced together by Henri Plantin, whose decendents (the Fabre-Abeille) family still run the estate today.

Château Mont-Redon owns 186 hectares (460 acres) of land in Chateauneuf du Pape, 100 hectares (247 acres) of which are planted to vines. Red grape varieties, including the classic southern Rhône trio of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, make up 80 percent of plantings. White varieties planted include Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. All 13 allowable varieties of the Chateauneuf du Pape are cultivated in the estate’s rocky, stony, red clay, sandy and limestone soils.
