Protests were widespread across France in several big cities, including Paris, Lyon and Nantes, where protesters threw stones and set fire to the local council building. Police riposted with tear gas, stun grenades and riot guns.

In Paris police officers were set alight by Molotov cocktails, with one suffering burns to their face and body, before being transferred to the hospital, according to state broadcaster France Télévisions.

Footage showed the flaming projectiles hitting the police in Paris’s 11th arrondissement. Police have made 30 arrests in the capital. Protesters have vandalised shops and hurled stones.
