The jungle skatepark of Malaysia. The historical importance to skateboarding history is enormous. Deep in the forests of Shah Alam lies the forgotten skatepark Bukit Cerakah. Built in late 1989 and completed in 1990, this park was the first concrete park ever built in Malaysia
This place looks like an ancient ruin, taken from an Indiana Jones film. It’s hard to believe that it’s not that old, yet in these conditions nature takes command and the result is pretty amazing, amazing in the power of nature that is, not amazing that it’s been left in this shape.
Being built in such a remote location is one of the factors that lead to the park to be abandoned and engulfed by the dense forest during the past 32 years. Yet not much information exists about the park, as skateboarding was not supported by the government in Malaysia at the time, this combined with the isolated location saw its demise.
The earliest documentation of the skatepark, apart from the archive newspaper clipping during the opening, was in 2016. Sidewalk magazine ran an article on the place after they had been sent photos from a friend while trekking through the forest of Selangor.
Selangor rainforest is a 544 hectare park consisting of man-made tropical rainforest with waterfalls and botanic gardens and is a major tourist attraction for travellers.
Since then it has appeared in a few skate vlogs on YT and some clean up attempts have been made by the local skateboarding community, and a brief rundown on its background along with some historical shots can be found on the skatemalaysia facebook page.
Over the recent years, this place has been visited by some pro skaters and BMX riders and vloggers, it has become more of a tourist attraction, yet these date back to 2017. The question remains, between when the park was built and 2016, has this park just been totally forgotten to become part of the jungle landscape?
