You hit Hilton Head for the ocean – whether you own a big boat or not. And also for golf. It is a golf mecca with great courses to test your game — while also being the home of the PGA’s Heritage tournament each April. We recently hit the booming South Carolina island resort town as it was getting ready for the spring rush. And we enjoyed another Hilton Head high point — the food. We hit Charlie’s, a French restaurant that is superb, fine dining with a relaxed atmosphere — helped by their specialty cocktails. First, we tried the mango martini — it has a tropical feel. With Van Gogh Mango Vodka, Key Lime and Pineapple Juice and Mango Puree. Good on a cold or hot day. Next, we sipped on the French martini. This is real different from the shaken not stirred kind. It also has a tropical feel. It has Stoli Vanilla vodka, Chambord, & Pineapple. And then the Charleston Mule – with Cannonball Chai Noon Vodka, Ginger Beer, & Lime. All 3 are a Great way to kick off the meal.
Charlie’s is known for fish. But if you’re not big on the fresh catch of the day, try their fillet mignon. As you can see, it is cooked to perfection. It could be one of the best we’ve ever had. But if you love fish, you need to get – their specials. The first special for us on this night was red fish — a mild, sweet and firm fish that was flaky and delicious. The big winner was the triggerfish. Similar to grouper, it was prepared with a mushroom sauté that was out of this world. The fish was moist and plentiful. You’ll go back and ask for this. We paired the trigger fish with a suggestion from our waitress, with the house Sancerre. This Sauvignon Blanc was excellent, not overpowering, and a perfect complement to the trigger fish. Charlie’s also has a vast wine selection with some labels you may not have heard of. And they have a rotating menu of desserts that you should try.
