Continuing with our exploration of the wines from the Beaujolais, our Wine Director, David Allen MW, tastes Domaine Jules Desjourneys Moulin a Vent Chassignol 2011. N.B. at one stage David says this is a 2012 – he is of course in error it is a 2011!
Fabien Duperry, the owner of Domaine Jules Desjourneys is a newcomer in Beaujolais region, but he makes astonishing, world-class wines from some fabulous vineyard sites both in Beaujolais and the Mâconnais. Formally a fine wine merchant from Burgundy, Duperry came to Beaujolais to make wine in 2007, aged 43.
Buying existing vineyards, Fabrice named his estate in honor of his hero, leading Beaujolais vigneron Jules Chauvet, Domaine Jules Desjourneys now comprises of 7 hectares of gobelet-trained Gamay on hillside sites in Fleurie and Moulin-a-Vent. The estate’s holdings include some vineyards planted over 140 years ago. Fabrice also farms 10 hectares of Chardonnay that he shares with another grower in the Macconnais region. Fabrice Duperray believes in making Beaujolais that can age for 25 years and regularly achieves this.
