Continuing our look at the wines from the Crus of Beaujolais, today our Wine Director, David Allen MW, tastes Regnie Grain & Granit 2019 from father and son team Jean-Paul & Charly Thevenet. This wine is currently the most searcher-for wine from Regnie on Wine-Searcher’s website & app.

Jean-Paul Thevenet has been one of the Beaujolais region’s more innovative producers, following the ideas of Jules Chauvet and his friend Marcel Lapierre he has been a pioneer of what has become natural winemaking. Believing in avoiding the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, his wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts, they are not chaptalized, extraction is gentle with no pump-overs or remontage, SO2 is only added in small amounts to the finished wine which is bottled without fining or filtration

Jean-Paul’s son Charly has joined his father making wines, but has purchased vineyards in his own rite. The Grain et Granite Cuvee comes from fruit from 2 lieu-dits owned by Charly. The two plots, Les Braves and Oeillat, the vines on these sites were planted in 1932 and 1946. The old vines are harvested by hand and vinification and ageing takes place in cement tanks. the fruit is placed in the fermenters as whole bunches.
