Our Wine Director, David Allen MW, tastes the wines of the historic Marques de Riscal Estate from the Rioja Region in Spain. Here he tastes their 2018 Reserva Rioja. This wine is one of the most searched for Riojas on our website and app.
The company was founded in 1858 by Camilo Hurtado de Amézega, the Marqués de Riscal. He had been living in Bordeaux and decided to bring French winemaking techniques back to his estate in Elciego. His wines became so popular that wire was stretched over the bottles to combat forgery, a feature that remains on this wine to this day. Over 150 years later, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest and most highly respected bodega of the Rioja appellation.
The Reserva spends around 2 years ageing in barrel and then a further years ageing in bottle prior to releae on the market.
