Our wine Director, David Allen MW tastes Chateau Canon, a classic Premier Grand Cru Classe (B) from Saint-Émilion, in Bordeaux.

The estate owns pockets of vineyards close to the town of Saint-Emilion, with a large core parcel right on the very edge. This parcel is almost completely walled and is traditionally hand-harvested and ploughed by horses. Over 60% of Canon’s vineyards are planted to Merlot. Most of the rest is Cabernet Franc, although there is a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon as well.

Canon was purchased by fashion giant Chanel in 1996, and the company set about renovating the cellars and vineyards with the aim of modernizing the brand.
