Porto (sometimes called Oporto) is Portugal’s second city and the largest settlement in Northern Portugal. Founded in pre-Roman times it was known by the Romans as Portus Cale, giving its name to the nation of Portugal.

It sits on the mouth of the River Douro and became a significant port in the Middle Ages. Porto is also known as the centre of the Port wine trade (the wine being named after it: Port wine is known in French as ‘porto’.)
