This modern dining table was supposed to be an exercise in Japanese Joinery, utilizing a Japanese style dovetail with a square draw bored peg. However, I cut a little too cutty cutty a bit too quicky quicky and instead, ended up with a more western style joint for this monster 8′ x 4′ dining table build from Spanish Cedar and Ash. The joints used for the base are the draw bored angled dovetail, an angled bridle joint, and a pretty basic lap joint that connects the two leg assemblies together with the stretcher. Size aside, this is in all actuality a very approachable dining table build. This wooden table is constructed from the ground up, ensuring that the sturdy, structurally sound base can support this heavy ash table top. All the angles, from the edge of the table, to the legs, to the ends of the proud tenons, are all set at ten degrees, to create congruence and symmetry from every line of sight. As per usual, I utilize a lot of general Japanese carpentry techniques in this build, such as peening tenons to fit a mortise, dampening end grain prior to chiseling, and spending a substantial amount of time on layout to ensure a snug fit straight off the tool.
