When one considers the origins of South African wines it is interesting to note that there are fine farms that date back centuries beyond the influx of French Huguenots with their strong traditions of winemaking. Twee Jonge Gezellen in Tulbagh takes its place among these elegant historic estates dating back to the 1700s when the governor of the Cape Willem van der Stel needed to drive expansion beyond Cape Town to the Winterberg, Witzenberg and Roodezand areas. Originally Twee Gezellen was one of these 14 farms which were developed. Wine production only began in the 20th century and at Twee Jonge Gezellen in their brave pioneering spirit they were responsible for the development of cold fermentation – a first. Another first, Twee Jonge Gezellen has the honour of being the first underground cellar in Africa.
The devastating earthquake in 1969 was responsible for delaying the production of Krone by 20 years. Finally and to much acclaim South Africans were able to enjoy the first Krone Borealis vintage (1987) in 1991. Since then visitors to the Cape are now happily able to appreciate the new generation and much admired Cap Classique range with all its nuances and sense of place.
The tradition continues with celebrated Winemaker Stephan de Beer who grew up in Tulbagh. He has achieved the distinction of being nominated as the 2020 Diners Club Winemaker of the year for his 2017 Krone Borealis Vintage Cuvée Brut – an impressive achievement!
One of Stephan de Beer’s ambitions was to carve out a career as a Cap Classique specialist and this he has achieved splendidly.
