For those of you who have never heard of the French 75 or are curious, it is a cocktail that dates back to at least 1915. It is made with lemon juice, gin, simple syrup, and champagne. Rumor has it that it is named as such because is is akin to being shelled with the French 75mm field gun. Despite such scary connotations, the French 75 is quite palatable and refreshing, and certainly not difficult to drink. Unlike many old and/or historic cocktails, it is quite nice and I suspect that you’ll enjoy it if you try it. Wikipedia has a brief page on it, and you can find many recipes online. While most of those that I’ve found have differing amounts of the ingredients, I recommend my PERFECT FRENCH 75 if you want the best experience.
Another in the series on perfect cocktails. Here’s the recipe:
2oz gin (whichever type suits you)
1/2oz lemon juice
1/2oz simple syrup
1/4oz elderflour liquor (St Germain is what we use)
Shake vigorously, serve in a glass of your choice, and then top with champagne/sparkling wine.
