This is the best potato side dish for any occasion – you weekday dinner with family or fancy reception on a weekend. Tried and tested many times, it will be gone in no time!

Here are the ingredients for approx 6-8 servings:
– 1 kg or 2,2 lbs of potatoes
– 1-5 garlic cloves (to taste, because not everybody likes garlic… I used 5!)
– 400 ml or 1,5 cups of full fat milk*
– 280 ml or 1 cup of heavy cream, liquid cream or evaporated milk*
– 0,5 teaspoon of nutmeg
– Salt, pepper to taste
– Some butter to rub baking dish
– Shredded cheese to sprinkle on top (optional)
*You can use milk only, but then add 2 tablespoons of butter

Cooking instructions:
– Peel and crush garlic
– Wash and peel the potatoes. The skin on my potatoes was very thin and soft, so I didn’t peel them – it gives more taste. Slice the potatoes, do not wash them after they’ve been cut – we need the starch in them.
– Pour milk and cream into a saucepan (use non stick, because milk will stick!), add garlic and nutmeg
– Slowly heat the milk and cream mixture until bubbles start to appear
– Add sliced potatoes to the milk, cook for 10-15 minutes or until they start to soften up, but just very slightly. Add a pinch of salt and pepper.
– Preheat oven to 180°C or 350°F. Rub your baking dish with butter and place the potatoes in it. Add more salt and pepper.
– Pour the milk and cream mixture on top of potatoes, but not too much – until it barely covers the potatoes.
– You can add a teaspoon of butter or shredded cheese on top (optional)
– Bake in a preheated oven for 45 to 55 minutes at 180°C / 350°F
– Enjoy!
