Created under the First Empire, this elegantly proportioned gallery (45m long, 13 wide and 10 high) was made very quickly: ordered at the end of 1809, it served as early as the spring of 1810. Door tops and paintings of the vault exalt the l Empire, offering an evocation of the main victories of Napoleon I.
Under the Second Empire, two marble statues were installed by Napoleon III, representing Napoleon I after Chaudet and Madame Mère after Canova. The gallery then serves as a ceremonial dining room during the series. Between 1914 and 1917, it houses a military hospital.
Four bas-reliefs by Charles-Auguste Taunay adorn the door tops. Through the old gods are evoked the benefits of the new Napoleonic regime. On the side of the deer gallery are represented, on the right, Jupiter assisted by Minerve forgives the conquered cities , and on the left, Mars back in France brings back Abundance and Victory . Those who surmount the doors of the antigalerie of ball show on the right Apollon comes to revive the earth by presenting to him the arts . On the left Hercules puts the criminals to flight and places Innocence under the protection of justice , a draped woman holding the “French Code” in her hand.
The decorative painting entrusted to the Dubois and Redouté workshop was realized in 1811-1812. The cradle vault alone offers a summary of the victories of the Empire, clearly stated: the Moskowa (1812), Jena (1806), Austerlitz (1805), Arcole (1796), the Pyramids (1798), Wagram (1809) ), Rivoli (1797), Friedland (1807), the surrender of Ulm (1805), the campaign of Egypt (1798-1799).
The eardrums were ordered from Girodet in December 1814, after the fall of the Empire, to replace the imperial arms that were there. Are represented The Dance of Graces presided by Apollo on the side of the chapel and The Dance of the Nymphs presided over by the God Pan , on the other.
