In this episode I visit the Christmas Capitol of France if not all of Europe. Two days of exploring the Medieval towns of Strasbourg and Colmar , France. Both towns are within the beautiful region of Alsace. A Province of Eastern France that has transferred hands so many times that it has left it’s mark on the area. So much so that they have their own language.
Christmas Markets in Alsace go back to the 1500’s. Over 500 years of history is shown in the care that the residents take when decorating the city for the holiday festivities. It all starts in Strasbourg, known as Capitale de Noel (Capitol of Christmas). Where markets fill the many different squares throughout the city’s old town. The lights cover the whole town with many establishments seeming to try and outdo each other in extravagance. Make sure you climb the Notre Dame Cathedral de Strasbourg as the lights turn on. You will gifted with an aerial view the likes of which you have never seen before.
Moving onto Colmar you feel as if you are part of one big Christmas Wonderland. While the city of Strasbourg is more grand in scale, the town of Colmar, being much smaller, feels like the whole historical district is one big market. Stalls flow throughout the little squares and connect through the streets. The town of Colmar feels truly feels like a Christmas fairytale. Make sure to visit the La Petit Venise while here. It’s a small canal street that has houses that come straight out a Hans Christen Anderson book.
