Did you know that Colorado actually grows grapes and makes wine? If you head over to the Western Slope just outside of Grand Junction, Palisade is a cute little oasis that has more than 20 wineries and a bike byway that rides by nearly all of them. Follow the BABs as we take you on the Fruit and Wine Byway by road bikes, show you the best places to eat, and our mini review of the vineyards. We would also encourage you to bring a mountain bike too because the new Palisade Plunge just opened up and looks like loads of fun. Make sure to schedule your shuttle though!
Things to note:
* Most of the vineyards close at 5, some close at 6.
* Tastings are cheap, especially if you buy a bottle.
* Colorado is not known for its wine. Lower your expectations.
* The mountain biking is just as good if not better than the road biking.
* Cameo exit just before Palisade has wild horses if you go for a hike!
* Palisade Brewing Company had delicious food and beer, especially after you get wined out. Cool outdoor seating area too.
* Peche Restaurant was by far the fanciest in Palisade. French restaurant with limited veggie options. Ok wine list. Cocktails are good!
* Normally the weather is cooperative and warm here, but the weekend we picked in late October was pretty chilly with some rain.
