Chateau Croix Mouton (pronounced: “Cwa Mouton”) has a long history of being a vineyard back to the Roman times. For many years, it was in disrepute and not actively used as a winery. This changed in 1997 when the winery/vineyard was purchased by Jean Philippe Janoueix (last name pronounced “jan wicks”), who also owns a number of other Bordeaux wineries such as Croix St. George and La Confession. He also hired superstar Michel Rolland to be a wine consultant for the winery.
The winery was formerly known as Chateau Mouton but Chateau Mouton Rothschild disputed their use of this name so now it is called Croix Mouton. The winery is located near Fronsac and the Dourdogne river, near the city of Lugon.
Average age of vines is 43 years. The winery consists of 78 hectares of land. They produce about 32,000 cases of wine each year and the blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec. The wine is fermented in 50% new French oak barrels, then aged in 50% new French oak barrels for 9 months.
The cork is a DIAM cork and the number is 10, signifying the cork is guaranteed against mold/corked wine for 10 years. That also gives you an idea of the shelf life of the wine.
Price of the wine is $32.00 + 15% tax.
The color of the M on the label changes each year. I tried to contact the winery to see what the meaning of the color is for 2018 but they never responded to me
