Protesters in Lyon took the streets on Saturday against the rise of the extreme right in France.
“We are here to say that we will never leave the streets to those people (the far-right) or their violence, violence that can go far, even end up in terror attacks, we have to remind it,” said Raphael Arnault, a member of an anti-fascist group in Lyon, La Jeune Garde.
Arnault continued, “Monday this week in the Loire region, some members of the far-right were arrested with grenades, automatic rifles, shotguns and 2,500 rounds of ammunition. A real war arsenal.”
Protesters were seen waving flags of anti-fascist groups and carrying anti-fascist and pro-LGBTQ+ signs. Police monitored the march and blocked counterprotesters to stop clashes.
Some political figures marched alongside the activists including Jean-Luc Melenchon.
SOT, Raphael Arnault, Leader of anti-fascist group La Jeune Garde in Lyon (French): “We are here to say that we will never leave the streets to those people (the far-right) or their violence, violence that can go far, even end up in terror attacks, we have to remind it. Monday this week in the Loire region, some members of the far-right were arrested with grenades, automatic rifles, shotguns and 2,500 rounds of ammunition. A real war arsenal.”
SOT, Eric Coquerel, MP of La France Insoumise party (French): “I have the feeling sometimes that this government has double standards, they are more vigilant concerning one side more than the other. We have to acknowledge that the terrorist threats and violence linked to the far right is mounting, they are increasing. And this has to stop. This is why we are here, united and massively present.”
