[NEWS IN-DEPTH] France Makes “COVID pass” Mandatory for All Bars and Restaurants: Sebastien Falletti of Le Figaro

Since July 21, France has made it obligatory to show a passe sanitaire (health pass) to access public venues with more than 50 people. Starting Monday, August 9, the mandate will be extended even further to include long-distance transport, restaurants, cafes and even outdoor terraces.

About one-half of the French population have already been vaccinated, but the public sentiment isn’t so favorable to these new government measures.
For three consecutive weeks since the new measure was enacted, the French public have been protesting against the Covid pass, saying it infringed their freedom.

We have Sebastien Falletti, journalist at Le Figaro, joining us live in Paris to talk about this issue. Thanks for joining us.

So tell us, what exactly is the health pass or passe sanitaire that people are mandated to carry in public places?

The Constitutional Council, France’s highest legal authority, ruled on Thursday the controversial Covid-19 ‘health pass’ complies with the constitution. Will the decision carry any further impact?

How have people and public venues been reacting and adjusting to this new health pass measure that was enforced on July 21? There were reports about challenges in checking the passes at public sites. How have public venues been verifying these passes so far?

How do you think things will play out once the rule is extended to include cafes, restaurants and transportation starting next Monday? How do you think people will respond?

The French public have been protesting for weeks now, condemning the enforcement of the new rule. Why do people think the health pass is hindering their freedom?

What about tourists? How will they get health passes if they have been vaccinated elsewhere, or not at all? There’s very little information about this nor advice from the French government, causing confusion among those visiting the country.

How is the situation in other European countries? Do they also have health passes?
