On July 9th, Russians introduced a new law that requires French Champagne producers to add the words “sparkling wine” to the back of their label if they want to sell their bottles in Russia.

In addition, the same law allows Russian producers of sparkling wine to use the word “shampanskoye”, which means Champagne in Russia on their bottles.

Champagne was previously only allowed to be called Champagne if produced in that particular region in France.
