OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON Story with Adam Mariani | Filmed by Conor Hagen
Our love for and deep roots within Sonoma Valley are known; lesser known is our presence in Napa Valley. Since day one we’ve made Napa Cabernet, farming a small Cabernet and Syrah vineyard on the rugged slopes of Atlas Peak. We have now followed opportunity and curiosity down the mountain. This Field Guide bottling marks our first foray onto the Napa Valley floor, and the famed A.V.A. of Oakville.
Oakville is renowned for its deep, dark red soil — believed to be from an ancient avalanche that brought iron-rich sediment from the Vaca Mountains down to the valley floor.
This wine is grown on an old-school Lyre Trellis, commonly referred to as California Sprawl, featuring four cordons per vine instead of the traditional bi-lateral method. For this vintage, we harvested only the east side of the vine, capturing the fruit that invites the cool morning sun, and not that which languishes through the scorching afternoon light. This provides softer rounded tannins, delicate bright fruit, and refreshing natural acidity. The wine sustains a long, cold native yeast fermentation in stainless steel, before aging for 20 months in neutral oak. The result is a vibrant, deep and elegant wine.
