Xavier Weisskopf is one of the new generation of young producers in the Loire Valley, making wines filled with vigour and energy. Having studied viticulture and oenology at the main French wine school in Burgundy, he then worked as cellar-master at Chateau St-Cosme in the southern Rhône before buying his first parcel of vineyards in the region of Montlouis.
Here 100% Chenin Blanc is planted on similar soils to the more famous neighbouring region Vouvray. Xavier’s deft touch in the winery is transforming this old-vine material into wines of freshness, vivacity and not least, great value! He’s a quiet man who knows what he wants to do and how to go about it. He left the Rhône in favour of the Loire because of his love of Chenin. He converted to organic farming in 2009, and is strict is his avoidance of any herbicides or pesticides. He likes his wines to be fresh, mineral, and long and vertical rather than fat. And he’s doing a damn fine job of crafting them.
This classy sparkling wine comes from a 40 year old vineyard in the region of Montlouis, in the central Loire Valley. It spends 36 months resting on lees and is bottled without any dosage, or added sugar. It is a bright, refreshing sparkler with ripe golden-apple flavours that are both sumptuous and precise. It is completely dry and utterly refreshing.
