From one of France’s far-flung wine regions – the Pays Nantais, which sits on the western edge of the Loire Valley – come wines made by a man with one of the world’s great moustaches. We suspect this has no bearing on the quality of the wines, but it’s great to know nonetheless!
Jo Landron makes wines that brim with life and personality. He learnt to farm the land from his father, took control of the family domaine 1990, and has been making some the regions best wines ever since. The wines here are laser focussed, built on acidity and blisteringly dry and precise. Not a lot of flowers or fruit in these wines – instead, the taste of the sea breeze and the crunch of chalk. The unique expression of Landron’s wines are the result of the diversity of soil types that are found within his vineyards. All are farmed organically snd the wines are made with wild yeasts. This traditional, minimalist approach preserves the natural freshness and minerality that is a trademark of the very best wines of this genre.
These are wines of Riesling-like freshness and clarity, yet with the mineral drive of more expensive French whites (Burgundy, we’re looking at you) They represent some of the best value white wines in Europe today.
Made from local variety Folle Blanche, with a dash of Pinot Noir, this is a stunning sparkling wine that would give many entry level champagnes a run for their money….and in a few cases, knock them out of the park. It’s zesty and floral, but built around acidity and crunch. Very lovely.
