Sherwood Forest, Worksop, Nottinghamshire was once an area of Woodland and heathland that stretched over 30 miles from Nottingham to Worksop, Sherwood Forest was established as a royal hunting preserve in the 10th century. The area was made legendary as the home of the famous outlaw in the story of Robin Hood, who lived amongst the great oaks along with nature trails and walks. The area was revived by the Normans, with the forest enjoyed by successive kings and the link to royalty in this area continued as parts of the forest were acquired by nobility and the four main ducal estates developed. This unique area, known as The Dukeries, contains the estates of Welbeck, Clumber, Worksop, and Thoresby, and are full of heritage attractions to see.

Today, the sites of Thoresby and Clumber can be visited where you can see the country park estates and the grand houses. On the Welbeck Estate, you will find the Welbeck Farm Shop and the Harley Gallery, along with the School of Artisan Food. Through the years the Sherwood Forest has become fragmented as settlements developed and the rich wood natural resources in the area were used for building materials. You can now find a cluster of main country parks that offer a bit of insight into how this beautiful forest may have once appeared.

Some of the places you can visit include the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Rufford Abbey, and Sherwood Pines Forest Park. These locations are great for walks, picnics, and outdoor activities. Haywood Oaks is a small wood with hidden treasures.
