We make the classic Sidecar cocktail using two different recipes. The 2:1:1 version is the British version with more brandy in it from the Savoy Cocktail book from Harry Craddock in 1930. The equal part version is more internationally recognised and is the earliest recipe dating back to 1919 from Harry McElhone’s ABC of Cocktails and Robert Vermiere’s Cocktails: How to Mix Them from 1922. It is considered the reicpe from “the French school” rather than the “English school” like Harry Craddock.
It will never be known who did create the Sidecar with Harry McElhone first crediting the drink to Pat McGarry but then took the credit himself. It is said McGarry created the drink at Bucks Club London and made it popular in France by Harry McElhone from his bar in Paris.
