This week #BigOnWine visits New Zealand’s volcano-rich North Island and introduces a Sauvignon Blanc from the Hawke’s Bay area on the Pacific coast. This is a slightly up-market product, 50% unoaked wine and 50% aged in French barrels, with a price to match. The result is interesting to say the least – in the nose gooseberry with a salty tang, in the mouth dry and nicely acidic, plenty of peach and a distinct overlay of rhubarb! Ok, it costs a little extra – but what a nuanced wine we are getting to enjoy with flavourful fish and seafood. Serve cool – below 10 degrees.
