The topic of the day is Carignan.

🍇 Carignan is a red grape which is widely planted in France, in particular in the Languedoc-Rousillon, and other parts of the Western Mediterranean.

🌏 Despite being so widely planted in France and other countries such as Italy, the grape is believed to originate from Cariñena in the North East of Spain.

🍇Carignan is a high yielding, late ripening grape with some susceptibility to vine diseases such as powdery mildew. Its high yields make it an important variety for volume-driven producers.

🌏Carignan grows best in warm, dry climates on warm, dry soils. In the late 1980s it was the most planted grape variety in France.

🍷Carignan wine is known for its high tannins, high acid and dark colour. It makes an excellent blender, particularly with other grape varieties that are medium to low in any of the above categories.

🍷Carignan is not highly regarded as a single varietal wine, with the exception of old vines (at least 25+ years old) in its area of origin – North East Spain.

🌏Below are some examples of alternative names given to Carignan in different parts of the world:

Spain – Cariñena/o, Carinyena, Samsó, Mazuelo (in Rioja specifically)

USA – Carignane

Sardinia – Carignano, Bovale Grande, Bovale di Spagna
