🌏The Alsace wine region has 3 appellations:
-Alsace AOC
-Alsace Grand Cru AOC
-Cremant d’Alsace AOC
🥂Cremant d’Alsace is the sparkling wine appellation, but in this video I will be focusing only on the difference between Alsace AOC and Alsace Grand Cru AOC.
📍Key points about Alsace AOC:
-Wine must be made up of one or more of the 10 permitted Alsace grape varieties (see vid #1 for list).
-Wine can be varietal OR blended.
-If the wine is labelled as a single grape variety, it must contain no less than 100% of the nominated variety.
-If the wine is blended, the following wine labelling terms can give an indication of the contents;
EDELZWICKER – any blend of the 10 permitted grape varieties
GENTIL – 50% of blend is made up of wine from noble grape varieties
PINOT D’ALSACE – Blend is made up of wine from the four Pinot grapes; Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir & Auxerrois (N.B. Auxerrois has P.Noir as one of its parent grapes)
📍Key points about Alsace Grand Cru AOC:
-Made from specific, single vineyard sites.
-Stricter wine production rules than Alsace AOC.
-Wine must be single varietal using the four noble grapes.
-Exception to the above rule 👆 is Zotzenberg grand cru, which is permitted to use Sylvaner.
-Some, but not all, grand cru sites are allowed to create blends of the noble grapes.
-51 grand cru sites in total, mostly situated in the Haut-Rhin
-Permitted to produce dessert wine.
