Thousands of cultural sector workers took to the streets of Paris, on Tuesday, to protest the prolonged closure of cultural venues.
Protesters held placards reading ‘Muppets in the theatre not in government’ and ‘Without theatre I don’t live, I survive’ as they rallied at Place de la Bastille
Deputy director of the New Theatre Veronique Bellin stressed, “Culture is absolutely essential when we are going through a crisis, we consider that it is a mistake to believe that there is only the consumer sector that will allow us to get out of this crisis.”
On December 15, France came out of a six week lockdown, however, cultural venues including theatres, cinemas and museums will remain closed, as well as bars and restaurants, until 7 January at least.
SOT, Veronique Bellin, Deputy director of the New Theatre in Montreuil (French): “Culture is absolutely essential when we are going through a crisis, we consider that it is a mistake to believe that there is only the consumer sector that will allow us to get out of this crisis.”
SOT, Pascal, member of the National Federation of Arts in Public Space (French): “What makes us revolt is that things are not clear, they tell us (the government) you are going to open, we are opening, we are putting everything in place to play, to show, to be able to exist, and everything to suddenly give us restrictions. We do not manage to have visibility for our future. Yes, culture is essential, I work in the public space and we act with the population in the heart of the city and we reach a very large audience.”
SOT, Lou, Nova Company Actor (French): “I think I’m in the right place, and we are going to reopen (the theatres), in fact we will have to open, otherwise our society will continue to deteriorate and become sclerotic.”
