I wouldn't say our home is DATED, but it certainly feels a bit out of touch with current design trends and we've always dreamed of updating the kitchen. Now that we're finally in a place to do it financially, we want to go all out.

We started out thinking we could maybe DIY some of it, but honestly lol, watching too much HGTV can be dangerous. We decided to get some design inspo from a few recommended kitchen remodeling companies (the concept on the right pic came from Family Kitchen Cabinetry out of West Palm Beach).

My current dilemma is that I'm concerned over how much worse it'll make the REST of the house look if the kitchen undergoes such a massive transformation but the rest of the house is still stuck in the early 2000s design-wise. Any tips for affordable but impactful updates we can make, maybe cosmetically, to the rest of the house so that it doesn't feel like the kitchen is from a completely different home?

Thx

First world problems hahaha! The kitchen concept looks great, just call the rest of the house “vintage” until you find the time, budget and/or energy to renovate another part of the house. Self-compassion is a blessing with renovations, take it slow!

I was just discussing with my husband that my biggest regret is getting all white countertops (for the bathroom in my case). It gets dirty SO FAST, and it will stain like a mofo (no matter what the vendor will tell you).

Please consider gettting a different kind of countertop. I wish someone had told me how much of a pain in the ass the white countertop would be.

I think it’s a great idea. And experience has shown me that even a coat of paint can make everything else look shabby. lol. Just star painting walls in the house same color and you’ll be amazed. Love it!

Also, I’m not sure how many builtins you have through the house, but I think a natural progression with paint color will make it transition well. Changing out cabinets or even hardware and adding paint to them will really update the entire house.

The main thing is to make sure your cabinets look like they could plausibly belong in the style house you have. So nothing too shiny or modernist unless you have a sleek, modernist style of house. Shaker cabinets are fine in a ranch style house but for a 2 story colonial maybe a simple recessed panel would look better. If you have a white kitchen next to a dining room with 70s stained wood wainscoting, paint or remove the wainscoting. Tie it together.

You can update the rest of your house cosmetically to reference but not match your new kitchen as and when you have the time & money to do so. So maybe repaint the kitchen walls and other public rooms a pale greige or creamy white now. And paint all molding and trim the same shade of white as the cabinets. Later you can update your tchotchkes and throw pillow fabrics, repot your plants in modern planters, replace your door handles and hinges. That kind of thing. But paint will go a very long way in creating a cohesive look throughout the house.
