Okay, I know everyone has an opinion about what is and isn't okay to do with wood. If you're part of the "wood should never be painted over and the more natural the better" club, this discussion will likely disappoint you.
We're considering buying this house but this room is just kind of an eye sore and would likely be where we spend most of our time. It's an older house (1940s) but this is not part of the original design, so I don't feel like we'd be destroying a piece of history by changing it. Plus, if you look in the right corner, the boards don't even go floor to ceiling the whole way and it kind of awkwardly stands out.
I wouldn't mind restaining the wood on the ceiling to a different color and perhaps removing the wood on most of the walls and staining whats left over, but I'm interested in what others think.

If you really love the house you could move in and give yourself a deadline to decide on how to update it. I personally would paint the walls white, leave ceiling and floor alone, and do a big Persian rug. For all the wood paneling in the world, there are going to be times that someone decides to paint it. It’s not life or death, it is ok!
You could do a darker stain on the ceiling for sure…
The floor is lovely.
I would 100% change the walls if it were me.
