I love it when I get surprised by a value or bargain wine. Had this last night with baked porkchops stuffed with bread and apples. My expectations weren't high, and the first sip upon opening didn't reveal much. We poured a few ounces into each of our glasses and then left it for an hour as we finished prepping the meal. When we sat down to eat, we were like "omg, this is really nice!" Medium weight and smooth in the mouth, this wine is very fragrant, offering a nice balance of spice and fruit aromas, such as cherry, plum, nutmeg and toasted oak. The palate delivers bright, tart cherry, plum and spice flavors with vibrant acidity. It finishes surprisingly long, with bright cherry and lots of spice flavors.
85% sangiovese, 15% merlot and cab sauv. $25 CAD (approx $18.25 USD) at my local wine shop in western Canada. I would give this a solid 91 points.
