If you updated your soft and got a much bigger rug, that would change the look and feel of your room. It seems they need to be updated before your dark wood furniture (center table and console table).

I don’t think the dark wood is the problem. You mainly need a bigger rug that goes under the sofa and fills more of the space. You might also want to consider some color. The rug you have is muted and I think you need something with some bolder color.
