Ok, I’m going to try to post this again. I had the pleasure of visiting Emidio Pepe recently and got to taste though a few tasty back vintages. I am not going to go too into every tasting not for every wine. But a few notable vintages / wines (all of them were delicious, and I’d happily drink any of them any day) but the big standouts for me. *one more note is that we literally tasted about 100 wines the day before this while in Jesi so my notes wernt exactly as formal as I would have preferred.

Whites:

  1. 2004 Trebbiano – Tasting this was worth the trip to Italy in itself. The 2004 was perfectly developed with that classic gritty mineralogy that Emidio Pepe Trebbiano (really a lot of Trebbiano in Abruzzo TbH) is know for. On the front Palette I get ripe Apricot, honey, and a nutty, almost walnut like notes. This still had enough acidity to pair with rich risottos or seafood (and we did at the winery)!

2.2012 pecorino – I’m a massive fan of EP Pecorino in General due to the fact that I gravitate to brighter, easier drinking whites in most cases. But the 2012 was singing. Still high acidity and crisp, yet round due to it going through malo.

– green apple a lemon, but a stringent mineralogy lingered on the touch which saliva built up around my mouth, indicative of that acidity.

Reds:

1.2000 Montepuciano – I mean, this is legendary for a reason. It was as expressive as I hoped it’d be. The black Berry, tobacco a perfect level of oxidation. Hints of Parmesan rind and and almost slight touch of waxy mouth feel.

2.2008 Montepuciano in my opinion this was the juiciest of the bunch. I got a bit of a berry basket on the mid palett, but of course it was balenced and had a a touch of oxidation, which was also welcomed and helped keep the wine jucy and velvety while mainting a grittiness that speaks to its biodynamic practices.

3.1993 Montepuciano – I haven’t had a ton of wine from my birth year that I’ve found to still have this much structure and acidity left in it. The oxidation is present but this wines still absolutely delicious.

* my notes don’t do this tasting justice. But Im enjoying a delicious glass of franciacorta at the moment and my fingers are ready for a break 🍷
