Video of frost prevention in Saint Emilion captured this spring.
As we covered yesterday, this is how frost prevention looks in Saint-Émilion, in the Bordeaux region of France.
But this time in a video!
These are so-called candles that winemakers light around 2-3am to prevent the freshly bursting buds from freezing.
If buds were to freeze – there might not be any grapes to harvest for the year.
The function of candles is not only to raise the temperature locally, but also to create a smoke layer to protect the bugs from frostbite once the sharp morning sun strikes the vines. The sun can be dangerous with the contrast of frosty temperatures.
Candles are one of the multiple methods used to fight the frost.
Other methods include: helicopters, wind turbines; hot air wind turbines, LED lights, water sprinklers, and others.
If you like – I can cover this topic in one of the winery mini documentaries that I make.
Thank you for the enormous support that you guys gave me after posting the photos from this day.
I've never had so many people see my pictures and leave so many amazing comments.

Stayed at the winery pictured in 2024 – the family owners were wonderful, and waking up to the workers tending the vines was so peaceful. We were there in late spring so they had all the candles out on the vine buds. Love the shots!
