I’d love to turn these two recessed areas into built ins someday, but that’s not in the cards right now. Struggling to figure out how to decorate without feeling unbalanced or awkward, and not sure how to balance wall decor above two differently sized pieces of furniture. Feels meh as it is now.

Its the symmetry. You need to buy the same piece on the right for the left.
If you can, swap out one of the pieces with another piece of furniture in your home that gives more symmetry.
