The 2019 Domaine aux Moines Savennières La Roche aux Moines is a great reminder of what makes Chenin such a glorious, and underappreciated, variety. I almost hesitate to pump this wine’s tires out of fear that I’ll be spilling one of the few remaining secrets of great wine: Loire Chenin is some of the very best wine in the world that’s still affordable.

The wine itself shows all the classic Chenin character. On the nose: pear, pineapple, ripe lemon, honey, beeswax, raw almond, and a touch of flinty smokiness in the background. I drank this over three days with pan-seared salmon with dill sauce, then roast chicken, and finished the bottle on its own. It paired beautifully with everything, and was just as compelling as a solo sipper.

On the palate it’s beautifully balanced with great concentration. The texture is both creamy and vibrant, even fresher than the nose suggests, finishing with a saline note that pulls you right back for the next sip.

    95 pts.

And the second rule of Tessa Laroche Club is….

(but, yes, for my money she’s perhaps the best winemaker in Savennieres)
