Hello – I feel like my living room is missing something. Maybe some pictures on a wall or a fancy floor lamp. I will be replacing our coffee table with a round walnut one, and a smaller one for the bay window.

However, I can’t help but feel something feels a bit off. Please excuse the clutter, we have 2 very young children.

It’s giving woodland vibes a little bit, which wasn’t my original intention. What would you add or change to give this a finished look? Or is the whole style just off?

I’d start with one anchor rug and warmer lighting before changing much else. The room mostly feels like it wants a clearer focal point.

Can you remove the carpet and get 2 nice area rugs for each seating area instead? Or at least replace the extra piece of carpet under the coffee table with a pretty area rug? Also, some artwork on the walls or a central light fixture as others have mentioned. What about painting the walls or just painting an accent wall? The room is missing a focal point to pull everything together.

Lighting and removing all that carpet to put down wood flooring then some area rugs.

i’d remove the rug. it looks like you had extra carpet and couldn’t decide what to do with it so you turned it into an area rug. a rug should be used as a delineation of space. because it’s the same color and made from the same exact material, it isn’t really adding anything.

I would change all the furniture place a large rug in the middle put a 2/3 seater sofa and opposite it 2 contrasting chair sofas to create a rectangular concave all on the rug

Then some cool art on the walls to lift

Check out Andrew Martin they have some very beautiful and high quality forever sofa and chairs

And Conceptually Yours for Rug and amazing art options which are affordable.

Pretty please tell me where you got your ottoman I’ve been SEARCHING!

The rugs on the carpet need to go. And if you insist on having carpets anyway: use colored ones.

Window treatment and carpeting is very dated and old fashioned

Invest in better furniture. The ikea coffee table lacks character and interest. 1 too many Boucle chairs; remove one and put a drink table between them. The sofa is very modern but the wall trim is more traditional; where is your overall design headed?

  10. I actually think that the carpet looks in good condition and instead of spending hella money to pull it all and replace with wood floors don’t be afraid to just put down rugs over the carpet to zone the two spaces

I don’t get what you get from the space. What’s throwing me off is the rug of same material over the wall to wall carpet…and the room is essentially a white and tan box.

You have two distinct zones going, and if you replace the small area rug in the sofa area with something with pattern and color I think you would be happier.

Also yes to art on the walls as that would tone down the overall white and tan that is overwhelming the space. You need patterns in there as everything is a solid.

Lose the drapes and blinds, either shades or shutters, wood on floor

Some art or something on the walls. But don’t buy something mass produced. Get something from an artist. Something interesting with character. Not something at Ikea or Home Goods. Any artifacts from travels? Or go to a antique shop and find something you like. I just think the space is a little plain. It needs some character

The glider right next to the other chairs is confusing. Also the rug thats the same as the carpet, not sure about that. I love the couch and the curtains. I knew you had littles from those coffee table things lol—consider wall mounting the tv for safety!!! Eventually you will need more floor space or storage space for toys/actvities so tv console can be replaced or repurposed. Personally i dont love the coffee table. I have two young kids and we actually dont really have a coffee table anymore lol. We have a small one we keep in yhe garage and bring out when we have people over. Also remember this is a CHAPTER of life and your house needs to accommodate them now but they will grow and it wont always look like it does.

What about a big colorful area rug under the coffee table

Your carpeting is in good condition and I can see the desire for it with young kids, however, it’s killing the potential of the room. Like others, I also don’t understand the carpet-on-carpet under the coffee table.

I created this on ChatGPT as a possible example to switch to. The kids could have a “play rug” at the other end of the room if desired. And of course, the rug can be more modern… I just asked ChatGPT for a rug with navy, green, cream and red to tie in to your furniture.

Carpet on carpet is some sadistic work.

How many bodies you got hidden under there, OP?

The rug and carpeting are a distraction and there seems to bend focal point. Half the furniture is pointed at one wall, the other half at the opposite wall. They’re not working together.

I would rearrange the white chairs to face each other and the bay window. Make that a more enclosed grouping so there are two areas vs one and an appendage. And get some colorful things up on the walls!
