Been in this house a little over a year. The previous owner put down a large area rug in this spot and now I know why. The sun comes through here and is discoloring the floor. I’d like to add a large area rug to prevent further damage. Would round or rectangular be better? The discoloration isn’t so obvious until I move my small entry rug. Open to other suggestions too.

Oval shape would work.
An oval or a large circular rug would be perfect! Since it’s an odd shape it’ll fill the space without fighting with the odd angles of the room
Not necessarily the prettiest, but I would seriously consider a boot tray that actually catches the water and keeps it away from the floor, that’s than a rug that will take ages to dry.
Another option is a decorative tray for a table repurposed.
