Are there ways to make rooms like this look more modern and elegant?

We're looking at a house that has all the bedrooms upstairs like this. How do you work with this type of walls to maximize the space, place furniture, etc.

And particularly, are there any way ways to make such spaces look more modern?

(I am also concerned about the lack of natural light).
