+ a recap of my wine filled trip around New York City.
Colour: A deep yellow/gold.
On the nose: predominate petrol with some apple sauce and honey notes.
On the palate: green apples, lime, tangerines, peaches, dried apricots, and honey. Perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. You get that initial Auslese sweetness and it is immediately balanced by the acidity. Just a slight spritz of effervescence on the first sip that quickly dissipates after. Alcohol is basically undetectable at 7.5%. Mouthfeel is thick, luscious, and mouth coating. Really good concentration. Finish is ridiculously long, easily over a minute, and moving your tongue around your mouth you still find little pockets of liquid gold. I get a hint of some oyster shell type minerality right at end, giving it that last little bit of a complex background note.
This was from a half bottle (375ml) and is drinking perfectly now. One of the best Rieslings I have had. Shows some great aged characteristics but still has a bit of freshness still left in it. I used an Ah-so to pull the cork, and the cork was roughly 50% saturated.
I recently came back from a trip to New York City, and of course had to stop at some wine shops to bring home some souvenirs. I purposely checked a huge suitcase just to bring back some bottles. I picked up this Riesling, as well as some others from Flatiron Wine & Spirits. Great little shop. Tons of aged stuff, definitely the most aged wine I’ve seen in a store. Great prices too. I picked up some aged J.J. Prüm Kabinett and Auslese Riesling, as well as a 1999 von Hövel Beerenauslese. Staff was really cool and hooked me up with a free wine key. I actually ended up coming here a second time because my backpack could only hold so many bottles each trip.
After our first day in the city, and a stomach full of Chinese food, I was craving some wine to end the day. We were staying off Bowery in Chinatown, and decided to walk over to Somm Time to have a glass. After a chilly 15 minute walk, having to dodge a man yelling at nothing in the middle of the street, we made it to this quaint little wine bar. Inside it had a warm ambiance, lit by candle light, and was quite lively for a Wednesday night. Their wine menu was really diverse, with a lot of underrepresented regions being present on the list. I had been wanting to try some wines from Bergerac for a while, so I ordered a glass of 2023 Chateau Le Payral Bergerac Sec. Some brief notes, and yes I did take tasting notes while sitting in a crowded wine bar:
“Light straw yellow colour. On the nose: minerals, citrus, and some peach. On the palate: lemon, lime, as well as some citrus pith. Lots of minerals and almost steely metallic finish. Fairly light bodied. High acidity, leaves your mouth puckering. Decent wine, nothing overtly complex. Would be a good food wine.”
Overall, a great little wine bar with an interesting menu. Their food looked quite good but I just had a glass of wine. I found this place based on recommendations from this subreddit. Prices are decent. Would definitely recommend stopping by if in the area.
A couple days later, I visited Astor Wine & Spirits. Definitely a bigger store with a wide variety of wines, also a great spirits selection. Their temp controlled wine area had a lot of cool stuff, some Gran Reserva Rioja from the 90s, aged vintage champagne, and some old dessert wines from the Loire Valley peaked my interest. It was a Saturday night, so they were doing a tasting at their counter. A flight of diverse and funky Italian wines, as a Gavi fan, it was definitely my favorite out of the flight. I don’t remember too much about the others. With limited suitcase space, I really had to pick and choose, so I ended up grabbing a 2018 Dr. Loosen Beerenauslese in a tiny little 187ml bottle.
After stopping at Astor Wine & Spirits, we grabbed dinner at Taishoken, a ramen restaurant known for having invented Tsukeman, a style of dipping ramen. Food was pretty good, but I noticed on the menu that their house wine was a 2023 Hermann J. Wiemer Chardonnay. Being in New York, I had to drink some New York wine. I do have prior experience with Hermann J. Wiemer, with them producing some of my favorite Finger Lakes Riesling, but I had yet to try their Chardonnay. I didn’t take any notes, but it was a very good crisp and refreshing style of Chardonnay. Lots of citrus with very little butter or oak influence. Great price at like $9 for a glass, and paired well with the chicken karaage and tsukeman.
Overall I had a great time in New York. The weather was my favorite: cold, cloudy, and a little drizzly. I got to stop by some great wine shops and eat tons of good food. I really enjoyed staying near Chinatown, there are tons of really good places to eat within a five minute walk (many of them BYOB/W). Next time I definitely want to visit some more wine bars. Trying some Riesling flights at Terrior and dessert at Lei were on my list, but by the end of the day we were so tired and full that we just passed out early. I love checking out cities and exploring their food and wine scenes, and New York definitely has one of the best. Will definitely be back again soon for some more wine, pizza, and bagels.
