Seeking some help!
I’ve been in my home for about a year and a half and made too many impulse buys in the beginning that just didn’t work out the way I wanted them to. Trying to figure out this room and it’s been difficult because I strongly dislike the engineered floors we had installed. We tried a faded red/blue rug initially and it just looked awful with the couch and fireplace, we are on to our second rug and I like the pattern but it’s just too small and awkward. I prefer to buy vintage rugs so the hunt takes forever 😭 I wanted to try and go bold with the rug, but keep leaning to lighter beiges/neutrals because there’s soo much dark wood in the house. We also went bold and dark with our TV room so I feel okay keeping this one lighter.
This is my current room and my tentative idea to change it up, feedback welcome 😬

I LOVE the pic with the green chairs! I think everything going on in that picture is great
The instinct toward lighter neutrals with that much dark wood makes sense – you need breathing room somewhere. The green chairs idea is actually a smart call; that kind of saturated botanical green reads as warm and organic rather than cold, so it won’t fight the wood the way you might worry it would.
For the rug hunt – with vintage you’re right that it takes patience, but I’d look for something with cream or warm ivory as the base, maybe a worn kilim or oushak with some dusty terracotta or sage in the pattern. Those tend to bridge dark wood floors beautifully without adding more visual weight.
Also worth sizing up significantly when you find the right one. A lot of living rooms look better with a rug that feels almost too large – ideally front legs of all seating on it, 8×10 or even larger depending on the room.
