I think I just had my first bad bottle but I’m not sure? It had such a weird smell that I couldn’t pin down but I know I didn’t like it. And the aroma carried over a bit into the palate but also the palate was so muted, I couldn’t really taste anything. So it was just a really weird and unpleasant experience. I thought chilling it and letting air for a bit would help but it didn’t. Thought I had a dirty glass but I still got the weird smell.

I almost wanna call it mousy but I really don’t even know what a mouse smells like LOL.

It was just a weird funk that I did not like and was distracting.

Wondering if anyone has had experiences with Peron similar to this.

Also, maybe you can help me figure out wtf I was smelling?

FYI – the bottle was in a fridge at like 53 degrees for the last month or so

I heard great things about Peron, and I actually have another bottle from the producer and I’m excited to try it. I’m bummed that I think I just had a bad bottle, but also I know it’s part of the game, and also it’s kinda cool to experience something that I legitimately did NOT enjoy cos it’ll help me later on.

Mouse usually only becomes apparent when you actually drink it and it mixes with your saliva.. people have different PH levels in their saliva which is why some people can’t detect it..

I assume you’d know how VA or cork taint would smell?

Might need some time to open up and let the weirdness blow off..

Did it get worse/stronger in your mouth? Like maybe the first sip was ok and the second was bad?

Was it musty? If you put some saran wrap in a glass with the wine, did it get better?

Was it sort of chemical or stinky? If you put a clean penny in a glass, does it get better?

Does it smell like wet plastic bandaids (think the kind you get as a kid), sweaty, or cowpat-y?

    Does it smell like sauerkraut?

First of all: Bring it back to your wine merchant and get your money back.

Second is about what could be wrong with it:

It can’t be mousey, since mousiness is a reaction with saliva. So it only appears as a taste rather than a smell.

It could be brettanomyces, but since you let out air for a while, that also sounds unlikely.

It could be that it was corked? Or it could be that it is just fermentation that went wrong.

I’ve only had good Peron, but any bottle from any maker could go bad.

It could be due to bad storage somewhere between the wine producer and the wine seller.

More often than not, though, it has to do with hygiene. Making anything with natural fermentation requires a lot of thorough cleaning. Talk to anyone who attempted beer brewing. Wine is more forgiving, but it might happen.

I’ll keep an eye on more commentaries to see if more people have experienced this with Peron specifically.
